چکیده

Frequent cloud cover is a major environmental constraint to optical remote sensing studies in Arctic locations, including studies based on ground or aircraft observations. The objective of this study was to determine how cloud induced variations in solar illumination a€ ect the normalized di€ erence vegetation index (NDVI) of representative vegetation types on the North Slope of Alaska. Illumination conditions were quanti® ed using a cloud index (incident shortwave radiation at the surface divided by radiation at the top of the atmosphere). The results indicated that the NDVI was stable across a wide range of cloud index values, particularly when the value exceeded 0.5. It is concluded that a cloud index threshold may be used to select unbiased NDVI values from a data set collected under varying illumination conditions.

Estimating CO 2 exchange at two sites in Arctic tundra ecosystems during the growing season using a spectral vegetation index

Measurements of carbon ̄ uxes in Arctic tundra landscapes are generally obtained through intensive ® eld work and involve the use of chamber and/or micrometeorological tower techniques. However, ® ndings in a variety of nonArctic ecosystems have demonstrated the potential of remote sensing-based techniques (particularly spectral vegetation indices) to provide estimates of CO2 exchange in amore ...

Ground-Based Hyperspectral Characterization of Alaska Tundra Vegetation along Environmental Gradients

Remote sensing has become a valuable tool in monitoring arctic environments. The aim of this paper is ground-based hyperspectral characterization of Low Arctic Alaskan tundra communities along four environmental gradients (regional climate, soil pH, toposequence, and soil moisture) that all vary in ground cover, biomass, and dominating plant communities. Field spectroscopy in connection with ve...

Spatial heterogeneity of tundra vegetation response to recent temperature changes

The spatial heterogeneity of recent decadal dynamics in vegetation greenness and biomass in response to changes in summer warmth index (SWI) was investigated along spatial gradients on the Arctic Slope of Alaska. Image spatial analysis was used to examine the spatial pattern of greenness dynamics from 1991 to 2000 as indicated by variations of the maximum normalized difference vegetation index ...

Divergent Arctic-Boreal Vegetation Changes between North America and Eurasia over the Past 30 Years

Arctic-Boreal region—mainly consisting of tundra, shrub lands, and boreal forests—has been experiencing an amplified warming over the past 30 years. As the main driving force of vegetation growth in the north, temperature exhibits tight coupling with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)—a proxy to photosynthetic activity. However, the comparison between North America (NA) and north...

Satellite-derived vegetation index and cover type maps for estimating carbon dioxide flux for arctic tundra regions

The spatial variabi]Lity and co-variability of two different types of remote sensing derivatives that portray vegetation and geomorphic patterns are analyzed in the context of estimating regional-scale CO 2 flux from land surfaces in the arctic tundra. For a study area encompassing the Kuparuk River watershed of the North Slope of Alaska, we compare satellite-derived maps of the normalized diff...
